FROM THE DESK OF MS. HESED

Parent Volunteers Make the School!!!

We owe enormous thanks to our PTA for the many, many hours of preparation that went into planning Saturday night’s well-run Trivia Night. Their efforts paid off with a great night for all.  Super thanks to all whose efforts added to the success of the night: those who came early to set-up and stayed late to clean-up, parents who volunteered to work rather than play that night, 7th and 8th graders who gave up their Saturday night to help out, and, of course, 330+ trivia players.  The first place table donated their $350.00 winnings to the new parent-assisted art program that will be piloted in April.  The night was a great success all around.

SMOS Bellarmine Speech Team Does It Again!

Bring home the gold seems to be our St. Margaret of Scotland speech team’s mantra.  Under the direction of 8th grade homeroom teacher, Cindy Wucher, and preschool assistant teacher, Carla Rosene, our students out-performed themselves.

Nine entries earned our school 3 blue ribbons and 6 gold ribbons.

Mariah Buckner, 7th grade – gold

Kailey Byer and John Mitchell – gold

Grace Clemens and Marisa Holloway – blue

Hannah Clemens, 7th grade – blue

Elisabeth Emerson and Meridian McDaniel – blue

Maggie Hagen, 8th grade – gold

Allie Kennebeck, 7th grade – gold

Emma Potts, 8th grade – gold

Lucie Wood, 7th grade – gold

Congratulations, coaches and students!

Dancing Classrooms

This program was begun in New York in 1994 by Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau and is part of the American Ballroom Theatre Company.  This is our first year with this company and already the kids are loving it.  The program intended for 5th graders sends a professional dance teacher to our school to teach our 5th graders ballroom dancing.  They are learning way more than a few ballroom dance steps, they are learning to work together, to act with manners, and to move with grace, just to name a few of the learning benefits.

Perhaps you’ve seen the documentary movie, Mad Hot Ballroom?  Well that’s us now.  Yesterday, as they left their 3rd lesson, one of the 5th graders announced to me that they would be learning the rumba on Friday, having already learned the merengue and the foxtrot!  Not to worry you will get to see them dancing at Performance Arts Night on May 9.  Before they perform for us, they will learn many more dance steps. Then they will go into competition with other 5th grade dancers from other schools.

Just a Few Reminders

+  No school on Monday in celebration of President’s Day.

+  We will all, preschool through 8th grade, gather at church for the 8:00 Ash Wednesday Mass on February 22.  We will NOT go to Mass together the following Friday, Feb. 24.

+ Parents of 7th and 8th graders who intend to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in May, please remember our parent meeting on February 23 at 7:00 in the cafeteria.  Please park on our lot so as to allow our neighbors to park in front of their own houses.
