Bellarmine Speech League is an archdiocesan organization designed to train students in the art of oral communication. Students in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to perfect their acting skills and to become poised, polished public speakers. Participants choose to perform either a monologue or a duet with humorous or serious content. Contestants are scored by two judges in three categories: audible, visible, and psychological. Excellent memorization and oral interpretation skills are a must.
Try-outs for the twelve member team take place in the fall. The team attends three Saturday regional meets at local Catholic elementary schools (in November, February, and March). The archdiocesan trophy meet is in the Spring. Each school may bring only a four member team. Students must be willing to practice with the team 2-3 times a week after school for an hour during the 6-8 weeks prior to the meet.
The SMOS speech team has been incredibly successful primarily because the students are so talented and so very eager to perfect their craft. Last year’s team earned nine 1st place ribbons, five gold ribbons, and one trophy.
Please contact Ms.Wucher, the 8 grade homeroom teacher, if you have questions about this extracurricular activity.
