Students are eligible for St. Margaret’s band program in 5th through 8th grade. Through the band program, students can learn to play an instrument and experience ensemble playing. Students are encouraged to participate in short performances at the Christmas Musical in December and at the PTA meeting at the end of the school year.
5th graders take Beginning Band during the school day on Mondays. Students going, into their second semester of band or better ( graders, and 5 graders in the spring) have band class after school on Mondays in the music classroom.
Students must have three things to participate in band:
- An instrument. Students generally rent their instruments on a semester basis from Nottleman Music Co. (314-631-1486). Clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, trombone and percussion are the traditional options offered in elementary bands.
- A collapsible (“wire”) music stand.
- The Standard of Excellence Book(s) by Bruce Pearson. The cost of participation in the band program is $50 per quarter.
A handbell ensemble can perform pieces alone or in combination with other instruments and voices. Opportunities to perform include school or parish Masses, concerts, and special events.
Handbell choir is open to 6 — 8 grades. A group of 8-10 interested handbell players is needed to form a choir. Special musical background is not necessary, although some note reading ability is helpful.. Rehearsals will be one day a week, after school, at church. Each ringer needs a pair of gloves ($5.00).
